Kunming is the capital of Yunnan province in Southwest China. It is not a major city by Chinese standards, but has a population of roughly 3 million people. Kunming is famous for good weather (nicknamed the “Spring City”) and lack of pollution. GoKunming provides much more detailed information than I can offer here, so I provide links from that website to places I recommend below.

Lost Garden (best hostel in my opinion, provides invitation letters for tourist visas)
Yunnan University Hotel
Heart 2 Heart Hostel (far from city center, but a nice getaway)
Upland Hostel
Cloudland Hostel

Things to do

Yunnan Provincial Museum
Yunnan Nationalities Village
Fubao Culture Town and Spa
Stone Forest in Shilin

M60 Art District (look for Valhalla brewery)
The Turtle
O’Reilly’s Irish Pub
Chapter One (more local than expat clientele, very nice owner)

Vegetarian (or Vegetarian-Friendly)
Su Jixiang (vegetarian buffet)
Green Garden
Tusheng Shiguan (organic, sensitive to vegetarian needs)

Ethnic Minority Cuisine
Nanzhao Fragrance (Bai cuisine; I take any guests to this restaurant)
Qingzhen Zhuyuan Muslim Restaurant
Daijia Zhai (Dai food, more of a Southeast Asian feel than Chinese)
